Elaine DeKoker Gloodt was an only child born and raised by two artists – Jay DeKoker and Matilda Greenwald. Jay was, among other things, an actor, poet, and an artist having picked up a paintbrush for the first time at 60 and amazed everyone with his Florida scenes. Matilda was a gifted artist and teacher having graduated from University of Chicago.
During the last part of Elaine’s terminal illness, she invited her only daughter Jean to paint a canvas. Elaine and Jean had painted together once in the 1970’s and that was the last time Jean had put a brush to canvas. Jean accepted the invitation and the last 6 weeks of Elaine’s life the two painted along side each other. The last few weeks Elaine was unable to paint herself but continued painting through instructing Jean in oil painting. Elaine did not believe that she had the words to instruct another in painting because what she did was like breathing – it was intuitive. She discovered that she was a very good instructor and her student discovered a passion for painting. There are grandchildren who have an interest in art so her artistic legacy will be continued.
